Flora and fauna
People visiting Crete can dive into the abundance of exotic plants and animals, wild forests, deep ravines, rare plants, and flowers. Crete is the home of a rich variety of flora that contains, among many hundreds of others, 130 species of wild flowers and herbs which are unique to the island. Among these are dictamo (Organium dictamus), a herb made famous by Aristotle for its medicinal value. Another unusual feature is an evergreen variety, Varietus cretica.
The fauna of Crete is as equally diverse as the flora of Crete with many endemic and rare species of bird, animal and marine life to be found. The seas around Crete - the Mediterranean, Aegean, Ionian and Libyan are full of a wide array of marine life.
Being in Crete gives a wonderful opportunity to see some of the rarest European birds of prey with ease. The magnificent Cretan Golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetus) and the Lammergeyer (Gypaetus barbatus), a subspecies unique to Crete, stand out among the birds to be spotted here.
Social ecosystem
Accommodation is based in Rethymno, town located in the middle between two largest cities in Crete: Chania and Heraklion. The old town of Rethymno is one of the best-preserved towns of the Renaissance and it combines the oriental features of the Turkish period with Renaissance-style Venetian architecture. The center of activities in Rethymno's Old Town and it's port is the most popular spot of the town! It is lined with cafeterias and restaurants, while the seafront promenade is perfect for evening strolls.
The modern city of Chania, located about 1h drive from the accommodation extends well beyond the old town. What most of visitors usually want to see is located within the Venetian fortification wall in the old town thought. These are: the Venetian harbour and its many cafés and restaurants, museums, churches, Minoan excavations, narrow alleys with picturesque houses, the famous lighthouse, the covered market and many shops, some of which offer very interesting products.
Going to Heraklion will take around 1h15m. The sea, the area's antiquities, excellent food - coffee, and friendly welcoming people make this contemporary town a delightful place to visit. Wander around the bazaars of Heraklion and take in the rich colors, tantalizing smells, and intense flavors. The Pateles open market is a melting pot of Heraklion society and sells everything from spices to books to leather. It’s loud and lively chaos is a must-have experience when visiting the capital of Crete, and it is frequented by long-term travelers.
